Alex’s Top 5 Mexican Eateries in MTL!

Being part Mexican American, I’ve made it my business to try as many Mexican restaurants as possible. Montreal has such a vibrant food scene (second only to NYC) so there’s a lot of competition for great food–you just have to know where to go. So, without further ado, here are my top five recommendations for when you’re in the mood for Mexican!

1. La Capital Tacos: – Chinatown

The only Mexican restaurant located in Chinatown. The ambiance is lively and the prices are very reasonable. Their appetizers are the bomb especially the mashed refried beans!  Also, this place hires a mariachi band for “cinco de mayo!” It’s a truly unique experience and a great place to go in the middle of winter.

2. Taco Bar: – NDG

A nice little gem on Monkland Avenue! Their tacos are $3 each and really hit the spot. My favourite is their “rajas con queso” taco! Best part of all? The restaurant is a stone’s throw away from CLC Montreal language school. (Update 9/10/17. Unfortunately, they’ve recently closed, but luckily, you can get your taco fix at a new place called Taco Monkland. The staff there are the nicest people!)

3. Emilianos: – Old Montreal

Upscale, Old Port, Mexican restaurant that aims to show people that Mexican cuisine is more than just tacos and burritos. Try the chicken with mole! It’s divine! Definitely a nice place to check out with your significant other or a bunch of friends. Call ahead to make a reservation as they can get pretty busy during the weekends.

4. Tejano: – St. Henri

Best substitute for American eatery Chipotle, and actually, even better than Chipotle!

5. El Rey del Taco: – Jean Talon Market

Real authentic Mexican restaurant located near the Jean Talon market where you can get hispanic foods and a mean “sopa de tortilla.” The tacos “al pastor” are my favourites.  In the spring and summer, you can spend time people watching as they have a terrace next to the market.
